Shakhtar Donetsk are currently in the United States participating in the Florida Cup and Liverpool chief executive Ian Ayre is out there trying to negotiate a deal.
Details of Ayre’s visit to the States was discussed on our members’ website earlier this week and we now have an explanation for the trip.
Liverpool have offered £24.5m for the Brazilian but early feedback suggests that his club is looking for around £38.5m.
Speaking in December, Shakhtar Donetsk manager Mircea Lucescu said: “Alex is now worth more than £29m.
“I think at the end of the season, were he to continue his performance, his value is £36.3m.
“If he were playing in a more competitive league, his transfer would be at the same level as that of Di Maria (£60m).”
